New York's I-STOP law curbs abuse of opioids by assuring patients aren't getting them from multiple doctors.
What are other states doing?
Besides New York, 15 other states have mandatory prescription monitoring programs, according to a 2013 report by the Trust for America's Health. New York, 23 other states and Washington, D.C., are participating in a federal Medicaid program to expand coverage of substance abuse services and treatment, while 22 states recommend or require education for prescribers of pain medication, the report said. New York was not included in the education tally though I-STOP contains language for a similar program.
