Patriot Ledger Opinion: Murray explores a better drug treatment system

We commend state Senate President Therese Murray's effort to create a special Senate committee to study drug addiction and treatment.
For years, experts, officials and The Patriot Ledger, in our ongoing series “Overdose: Killer drugs next door,” have warned of an alarming increase in the abuse of prescription drugs.
The worst of these are opioid-based painkillers like oxycodone. These drugs are highly addictive and relatively expensive, and many who get hooked on them gravitate to a cheaper substitute: heroin.
According to Trust for America’s Health, the number of drug-overdose deaths in the Bay State has increased 47 percent since 1999. And last year the Massachusetts Health Council reported the South Shore had the country’s highest rate of emergency-room visits involving illegal drug use.
