Advocates of the much-maligned prevention fund created by the health care law fought for its survival Thursday as House Republicans prepared to bring to the floor a bill that would repeal the fund to prevent student loan interest rates from doubling.

House Democratic leaders vowed to oppose the legislation (HR 4628) and Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi characterized the move as an “assault on women’s health.” Pelosi said that the Prevention and Public Health Fund makes investments in improved programs for breast and cervical cancer screening for women, children’s immunizations and newborn screenings.
