Contest sets goal of slimmer state

Alabamians have an extra incentive to keep their weight-loss resolutions over the next 10 weeks as the Scale Back Alabama statewide contest kicks off Saturday.

The contest, which is in its third year, is sponsored by the Alabama Hospital Association and the Alabama Department of Public Health.

According to a report from the Trust for America's Health that averaged obesity statistics for 2005 to 2007, Alabama is ranked the third highest in the nation for rates of adult obesity. Just over 30 percent of the state's population is considered obese, according to the report.
