State health campaign must go beyond ads

A 2006 report by the nonprofit Trust for America's Health made several recommendations to curb obesity, including: Develop an appropriate set of indicators to measure progress in the fight against obesity. Instead of focusing solely on weight loss, measure improved nutrition and increased physical activity. This is a project that the state can partner with HMSA on. Support community-driven efforts that increase access to healthy foods for low-income areas, and improve the "built-environment" (i.e. sidewalks, parks, bike paths) to create a setting more conducive to physical activity. This is something local officials can work on with developers as they plan for new communities.
