Editorial: Work to Shed "Fattest" Label

A top ranking in some categories is a most desirable thing, but obesity is not one of those categories. A new long-term plan for fighting obesity in Alabama, ranked last year as the nation's fattest state, offers a real prospect for helping Alabamians trim down or, better yet, stay trim to start with... ...A nonprofit research organization, Trust for America's Health, ranked Alabama the fattest state in the country. It found that about a third of Alabama adults are obese and another third are overweight. The state also had the nation's seventh highest obesity rate among high school students. "Overweight and obesity are prevalent and increasing in Alabama," the report stated, noting a 76 percent increase in obesity rates in a single decade.
