TFAH Releases Obesity Report and Hosts Congressional BriefingIn August, TFAH released a new report: F as in Fat: How Obesity Policies are Failing in America – 2007. The report, which finds that obesity rates have continued to rise in 31 states over the past year, with no states experiencing a decrease, includes a series of policy recommendations aimed at making healthy choices easy choices. The report is accompanied by a state supplement that tracks obesity-related legislative action in all 50 states. An online version is available at: http://healthyamericans.org/reports/obesity2007. On September 25th, TFAH sponsored a Congressional briefing to highlight the new obesity report and draw attention to ways in which Congress can incorporate physical activity into the reauthorization of the No Child Left Behind federal statute. TFAH Releases Report on Pandemic Flu and ChildrenIn October, TFAH and the American Academy of Pediatrics released an issue brief titled Pandemic Influenza: Warning, Children At-Risk. The brief explores the unique vulnerabilities children would face in the event of a flu pandemic and provides policy recommendations for reducing the impact of pandemic flu on children. Among the highlights of these recommendations are the following:
An online version is available at: http://healthyamericans.org/reports/fluchildren/ On October 24th, TFAH’s Executive Director Jeff Levi participated in a Congressional briefing regarding the important role wildlife surveillance systems play in detecting emerging infectious diseases. TFAH highlighted the ways in which surveillance fits into our larger effort on pandemic response. Other speakers included Representatives Nita M. Lowey (D-NY) and Rosa DeLauro (D-CT), and individuals from the Wildlife Conservation Society and National Geographic Society. On October 25th, TFAH’s Executive Director Jeff Levi participated in Safe America’s 2008 Safety and Health Priorities Briefing on Capitol Hill. The briefing aimed to educate policymakers on America’s preparedness to handle public health and safety issues. TFAH highlighted its Pandemic Influenza: Warning, Children at Risk report. Dr. Levi also received the 2007 Nonprofit Leadership Award from Safe America. Other speakers included Representatives Rob Andrews (D-NJ) and Bobby Rush (D-IL).

TFAH Details Vision for a Healthier AmericaFollowing TFAH’s Healthier America Summit this past June, a gathering of national leaders committed to making disease prevention and protection from public health threats national priorities, TFAH released a document that details its vision and agenda for a healthier America. The document provides a template for federal leadership and action that place wellness and prevention at the center of America’s health strategy. It discusses key components for a National Prevention Strategy including: leadership and accountability; funding; tools and knowledge needed for the implementation of the Strategy; the elimination of health disparities; and actions needed to address chronic disease, environmental health, infectious disease and health disaster preparedness.
