Minorities Shun Flu Shots

Federal health officials trying to promote flu shots among the elderly are using new tactics to influence black and Hispanic seniors, who are especially reluctant to get vaccinated...Public health officials are increasingly wrestling with the factors that cause such "health disparities," including lower income and educational levels, less access to doctors, lack of health insurance and lives short on exercise and healthful eating. "It's really quite stunning," said Shelley Hearne, executive director of Trust for America's Health, a nonprofit group in Washington that focuses on disease prevention. "I'm glad the CDC is making this effort. We clearly have a problem, and we need to find out what works, and where it works."
