Legislators must get serious about opioid epidemic

Pennsylvania faces a widely publicized narcotics epidemic and ranks ninth nationally for overdose fatalities, according to the Trust for America’s Health. But the state is making progress on the drug-abuse front. Naloxone, an antidote to heroin and prescription opioid overdoses, is widely available now, even without a prescription. By Labor Day, the state expects to roll out an expanded prescription drug monitoring database to help check the opioid abuse epidemic.
