Test kits available to Harrison County, WV, parents as war on drugs shifts gears

A 2013 study by the Trust For America’s Health reported West Virginia had the highest drug overdose death rate in the U.S. — 28.9 deaths per 100,000 people. 

That same study, “Prescription Drug Abuse: Strategies to Stop the Epidemic,” said overdose deaths in West Virginia had increased 605 percent since 1999, when the rate was 4.1 deaths per 100,000 people. Nationally, over that same time frame, the study said rates doubled in 29 states, tripled in 10 and quadrupled in four.
