ANTIBIOTIC STRATEGY WINS PRAISE BUT CALLS FOR MORE ACTION TOO — Those who supported a more aggressive approach to stem unnecessary antibiotic use were disappointed with the plan to rely on FDA’s voluntary program. It recommends new pharmaceutical labeling aimed at curbing the routine use of antibiotics in growing livestock. The supportive yet disappointed ranks include Rep. Louise Slaughter (D-NY), the only microbiologist in Congress, who requested the investigation by the President’s Council of Advisers on Science and Technology, as well as some outside advocates, including Trust for America’s Health.
