VTrendlines: Obtrusive obesity explored

• MEASURING OBESITY: The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention defines obesity as 203 pounds or more for a person who is 5 feet, 9 inches tall or an adult who has a body mass index of 30 or higher. Body mass index is a figure that factors together height and weight.

• RISKS: Obesity can cause numerous health problems, including diabetes. In 2010, 50,472 Vermonters had diabetes, a number that is expected to rise to 77,000 by 2030 if the current pace continues, according to the Trust for America's Health.
