Pain pills: Relief, yes, but more addicted & more die

While New York's law to control so-called "doctor shopping" is one of just 16 mandatory programs nationwide and among the strongest, the state still fails in one significant respect, according to a 2013 report by the Trust for America's Health, a nonprofit disease-prevention group. It does not require or recommend physicians receive training in pain management and the risks of legal painkillers, as 22 states do. A bill mandating three hours of education every two years passed the state Senate on June 9 and is awaiting action in the Assembly.
