COMMENTARY: Not too late to get a flu shot

Have you gotten your flu shot yet? If not, it is not too late. That is the message from health care organizations, pharmacists, legislators and others supporting “Vaccinate Texas” — a campaign to stress the importance of getting a flu vaccine and to move citizens to act to get inoculated.

The campaign — which targets all Texas residents and workers — comes on the heels of last week’s National Influenza Vaccination Week.

Everyone is at risk of contracting the flu. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommends annual flu vaccines for all Americans over age 6 months. Yet despite these recommendations, only about 4 in 10 Texans actually got a flu vaccination in 2010, according to the Trust for America’s Health advocacy organization.
