Iowans remained about as fat last year as they were a year earlier, but the state has climbed six spots in an annual ranking of obesity.

The Trust for America’s Health reports that 30.5 percent of Iowa adults were rated as obese last year, up from 29 percent in 2011. The data come from the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Because of statistical margins of error, the report’s authors said the results meant that Iowa’s obesity rate was considered holding steady.

The ranking went from 18th to 12th, but many states were bunched together, so the shift does not represent a dramatic change in how heavy Iowans are.
