Superheart to the rescue
September 29, 2012
The theme of this year's World Heart Day on Sept 29 is the prevention of heart disease in women and children. Worldwide, overweight and obesity cause serious concern for the future prevalence of cardiovascular diseases.
A report, F as in Fat: How Obesity Threatens America's Future, was released last week by the Trust for America's Health and the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation. It presents a new analysis by the National Heart Forum, which is based on modelling described in The Lancet's 2011obesity Series. The report estimates that, in all 50 US states, more than 44% of adults could be obese, and in 13 states more than 60% could be obese by 2030 if the current trajectory continues. This increase would also mean that the number of new cases of coronary heart disease or stroke could increase ten times between 2010 and 2020, and then double again by 2030.
