OUR VIEW: Alabama still ranks No. 4 in adult obesity, and we are still paying a hefty price for our heft

Some folks may have been tempted to cheer when they read the recent Birmingham News headline "Alabama ranks 4th fattest." And why not? While it's not good to be a state with the nation's fourth-highest rate of adult obesity, Alabama's been in worse shape before. Traditionally, we rank No. 2, trailing only our weighty neighbor to the west.
The new rankings might be interpreted as proof we Alabamians have finally gotten serious about our weight, that we've gotten off our fannies and hit the walking trail, that we've started going lighter on the seconds and heavier on the salads. Unfortunately, that's not necessarily true.
