Fit kids will someday be a healthy workforce

While local parents look at the Penacook Community Center and see a high-quality child care center, the business community sees a pool of future employees. We see the same at all the child care centers and schools in the state.

The impact of First Lady Michelle Obama's visit to shine a spotlight on the collective efforts of the community center, the Capital Area Wellness Coalition and the CATCH Kids Clubs that provide the activity and nutrition programs goes far beyond healthy, fit children. Eventually, healthy, fit children become healthy, fit employees and business owners.

Obesity is the health crisis of a generation. One in three American children is overweight or obese. The Trust for America's Health recently found that in New Hampshire the childhood obesity rate is about 13 percent and the adult rate is more than 25 percent.
