It's time to lose it, but not by eating pizza

Only in the alternative universe that is Washington, D.C., can a pepperoni pizza be considered a vegetable.

Yet, that's exactly what the U.S. House declared last week in a vote that will allow the nation's public schools to continue to count a slice of pizza as a lunchtime vegetable serving as long as there's a dab of tomato sauce slapped atop the dough.

The issue goes well beyond pizza, school lunches or even the lobbyist-driven, logic-defying decisions that frequently emerge from Congress.

The nation is suffering from an epidemic of obesity -- among adults and children -- that affects everything from health-care costs and quality of life, to job creation and militaryreadiness.

Indiana is at the epicenter of the epidemic.

Our state has the 15th highest adult obesityrate in the nation, according to a report released this year by the Trust for America's Health and the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation.
