This is the eighth year the Cleveland Clinic has welcomed prominent doctors, scientists, health industry CEOs, business development executives, venture capitalists and investment bankers from around the nation to a Medical Innovation Summit.
The meetings showcase Cleveland's rising power as a biotech center. This year's three-day meeting, which opened Monday with a look at topics such as the impact of health care reform on medical innovation, is attracting nearly 1,000 high-level participants.
Summit themes in previous years have tended toward surgical and pharmaceutical wizardry: orthopedics, neurosurgery, cardiovascular medicine, cancer treatment.
This year's emphasis, though, is as down-to-earth as can be: diabetes and obesity -- what causes these conditions, how to treat them and how to avoid them.
