If panic can't prompt a shutdown, perhaps pain can do the trick? Not for Karen Hendricks, the director of policy development
at Trust for America's Health. She kept her phone switched on while she was recovering from knee-replacement surgery in
November -- even as her focus remained fuzzy from postoperative throbbing.
"It's the kind of thing where people know you check your e-mails at 2 a.m., so they'll send them no matter what," she said.
"Even if you're at home, writhing."
