State must work harder on obesity

The costs associated with obesity are staggering. One-fourth of health-care costs are related to obesity, affecting our work force and economy. Each year, 63 million physician visits are obesity related and 40 million workdays are lost.

Reports issued this month from the Trust for America's Health/Robert Wood Johnson Foundation and Centers for Disease Control and Prevention indicate more than 30 percent of Tennesseans are obese. Tennessee has the nation's fourth-highest adult obesity rate and fifth-highest childhood obesity rate.
