F as in Fat: Obesity in Rhode Island

The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, through the Trust for America's Health, recently produced a report entitled F as in Fat: How Obesity Policies are Failing in America, 2009, which ranks the 50 states in terms of obesity rates.

The obesity epidemic has been and will continue to be a topic of great concern to us at the YMCA. The impact of the disease is not just immediate, but has long-term consequences on individuals and our society as a whole.

We were pleased to learn that Rhode Island is among the top 10 states with the lowest obesity rates - among adults. The only states with lower rates are our neighbors, Connecticut and Massachusetts. That means we have an active and health-conscious citizen base that is successfully working to keep their weight down.
