What Would a Separate Food Safety Agency Look Like?

The recent salmonella outbreak involving peanut products has given momentum to a long-stalled effort in Washington to restructure food safety regulation.

President Barack Obama alluded to it when he talked about "reorganizing" the dozen federal agencies in charge of food safety so they are working better together. One big supporter on Capitol Hill, Rep. Rosa DeLauro (D., Conn.), recently proposed a more immediate fix: take the "food" out of the Food and Drug Administration and set up a new Food Safety Administration.

Just in case folks are having trouble imagining how a FSA would work, the nonprofit Trust for America's Health today released a report explaining its vision.
