Comment on: Alabama 'Obesity Penalty' Stirs Debate

Last week, the non-profit advocacy group I lead, “Trust for America’s Health,” released our fifth annual “F as in Fat” report on obesity in America. We found that the obesity epidemic is a national struggle, and leaders are not doing enough to address it. We also found that obesity is not an equal opportunity health threat. Southern states have the highest obesity rates. Alabama is near the top of the charts, weighing in as the second most-obese in the nation. We recommended that leaders devise a comprehensive plan to address the crisis. Alabama’s state employee insurance board announced an aggressive reform a few days later, but their plan is not what we had in mind, and the people of Alabama deserve better.
