Food-safety plan under fire

Jeffrey Levi, executive director of advocacy group Trust for America's Health, said a major investment in food safety is needed, but Congress should hold back significant funding until there's a clear strategy. "While we advocate for a stronger investment in the public health system, we also expect accountability and transparency with respect to that investment," Levi testified. "The FDA's food safety system should be no different. Thus we urge FDA to articulate the steps it will take to achieve each element of the plan, including the personnel, laboratory capacity, information technology, and research necessary to carry out each concept in the document."
