Wellness and Prevention Health Reform Digest

       Reports and Announcements

  • The Alliance for a Healthier Generation has recognized 323 schools as America’s Healthiest Schools. The schools are all recipients of the Alliance’s National Healthy Schools Award, “exemplifying a growing national movement to create healthier schools for kids. This year’s winners hail from 30 states and the District of Columbia.”
  • The August session of CDC Public Health Grand Rounds – New Frontiers in Workplace Health, is scheduled for Tuesday, August 15th, 1:00 p.m. (EDT).  For a live webcast. “Many employers and employees understand workplace health and safety programs are opportunities to address worker health issues and stem rising healthcare costs, but they lack resources to implement and improve them.”

      Take Action

  • Reminder – The American Public Health Association Public Health Action Campaign (PHACT) is underway during the Congressional recess. “Now is a great time to advocate for public health in your own backyard. Congress is on recess until Sept. 5. This means your senators and representative are home and more accessible. Reaching out to your lawmakers in support of the Affordable Care Act, the Prevention and Public Health Fund and other important funding for public health is especially important as bipartisan health care discussions are beginning and the end of the fiscal year is quickly approaching.”

  Regulatory Opportunities and Announcements

  • The Food and Drug Administration has announced it will “pursue a strategic, new public health education campaign aimed at discouraging the use of e-cigarettes and other electronic nicotine delivery systems (ENDS) by kids.  The agency plans to expand it’s The Real Cost public education campaign to include messaging to teens about the dangers of using these products this fall while developing a full-scale campaign to launch in 2018.”

      Upcoming Events

  • The fifth meeting of the Department of Health and Human Services’ Secretary’s Advisory Committee on National Health Promotion and Disease Prevention Objectives for 2030 (Healthy People 2030) is scheduled for September 6th and 7th in Washington, DC.
  • The Agents of Change Summit “brings together public health leaders and luminaries using the science and technology of behavior change to improve health outcomes for all.” The 2018 Summit, scheduled for February 12th and 13th, will focus on obesity (activity and nutrition), drugs and alcohol, sexual health and tobacco.
  • Check out the many new meetings listed below.  Have a great weekend!

Opportunities/Deadlines

The Opportunities/Deadlines categories are live links you can click on for complete information.

Sign On Documents and Opportunities for Input

  • The National Coalition for Promoting Physical Activity is circulating a sign-on letter in support of CDC’s Division of Nutrition, Physical Activity and Obesity. “DNPAO protects the health of Americans at every stage of life by encouraging regular physical activity, good nutrition, and preventing adult and childhood obesity.” To sign on.
  • Call and email your senators to voice your strong opposition to the American Health Care Act and any effort to weaken or repeal the Affordable Care Act. Dial 202-224-3121 for the Capitol switchboard and ask to be transferred to your senator’s office.
  • CSPI has issued an action alert in opposition to the Regulatory Accountability Act (RAA), which recently passed the House and is up for consideration in Senate committee.  “The RAA could undermine all laws that establish health, safety, and other safeguards. Rather than choose the best health and safety protections, agencies would have to choose the cheapest option.”
  • The National Coalition for Promoting Physical Activity’s CEO Pledge for Physical Activity is a “national campaign to encourage every CEO in the United States to recognize physical activity as an important driver of employee health and business performance. The CEO Pledge is an evidence-based strategy for promoting a culture of physical activity within an organization. The Pledge is important because studies of employee wellness programs consistently find that executive leadership is critical to employee engagement. To sign on.
  • The National Alliance for Nutrition and Activity (NANA) is asking organizations to sign a pledge to have healthy meetings, conferences, and events.  To assist organizations, NANA has developed a Healthy Meeting Toolkit. (no deadline)

Regulatory Comments/Federal Postings

  • The Department of Health and Human Services is seeking feedback on the proposed Healthy People 2030 framework developed by the HHS Secretary’s Advisory Committee.  Deadline for submitting comments is September 29th.

  • Transportation for America is accepting applications for its new Smart City Collaborative with Sidewalk Labs.  “The collaborative is intended to help a small group of ambitious cities use technology thoughtfully and intentionally to meet their pressing transportation challenges.”
  • The American Public Health Association has announced a call for applications for its 2018 APHA Public Health Fellowship in Government. Candidates must have strong public health credentials and be able to spend one year in Washington, D.C. The fellow will have the option of working in the House or Senate on legislative and policy issues such as creating healthy communities, improving health equity, addressing environmental health concerns, population health or the social determinants of health.” For eligibility information, applications and additional information. (deadline, August 14th).
  • Voices for Healthy Kids have released a set of new grant opportunities. “The goal of the grant opportunities within this initiative is to make effective strategic investments in ongoing state, local, and tribal public policy issue campaigns in order to increase public policy impact on healthy weight and living among children.” (deadline, September 1st)
