     Today’s News (1/31/12)

Today’s news on the tax package is that the Congressional Budget Office’s Budget and Economic Outlook report sets the price of a ten year “doc fix” at $316 billion, up from the previous $290 billion estimate.  All the more reason to generate your organizational letters to conferees and leadership with a message of support for preserving the entire Prevention and Public Health Fund.  Our thanks to the National Alliance of State and Territorial AIDS Directors for the latest letter that we’ve seen – http://www.nastad.org/Docs/035707_NASTAD%20Letter%20to%20Congressional%20Leadership%20on%20PPHF.pdf.  Please keep them coming!

On Thursday, the House Transportation Committee will consider the American Energy and Infrastructure Jobs Act, a bill that would eliminate crucial funding for biking and walking programs.  America Bikes has posted an action alert, and invites you to contact your Representative for support for an amendment to preserve these programs – http://americabikes.org/transportation2012/. “This long-awaited multi-year transportation bill would eliminate the two largest programs that fund biking and walking infrastructure—Transportation Enhancements and Safe Routes to School. Without these programs, communities all over the country will lose resources to build the sidewalks, crosswalks, and bikeways that make biking and walking safe and accessible in communities across the country.”

The National Network of Public Health Institutes (NNPHI) has announced a funding opportunity for nonprofit organizations “hosting state level meetings promoting a cross-sector examination of the intersection between agriculture and human health.” As part of its work with the Healthy Farms, Healthy People Coalition, NNPHI will provide awards of up to $7,500.  This award will be coupled with limited technical assistance and participation in a learning community of other organizations hosting similar meetings.  The call for proposals follows – http://nnphi.org/uploads/media_items/call-for-proposals-healthy-farms-healthy-people-state-meetings-learning-community.original.pdf.  The deadline to apply is February 13th. Meeting Question” in the subject line.

TFAH’s upcoming briefing, Ready or Not? 2011 – Protecting the Public’s Health from Diseases, Disasters and Bioterrorism,  is scheduled for this Friday, February 3rd, 2:00 – 3:30 p.m., Capitol Visitors Center, SVC 209-08.  Please RSVP to Harmeet Singh at hsingh@tfah.org.
